[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A practical demonstration by Damian Callan of the many techniques used by the French artist Edgar Degas. This demonstration will be of interest to art lovers and amateur artists. There is no doubt that making a systematic study of great artists is one way to improve your own painting techniques.

Entrance is £2 ( £1 for PCAA members) at the door.

We look forward to welcoming you to this lecture/demonstration.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″ el_class=”image”][vc_single_image image=”15805″ border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Edgar Degas: Born 19th July 1874; Died 27th September 1917
Edgar Degas is often considered to be one of the founders of Impressionism, a term he rejected considering himself to be a realist. He was a brilliant draftsman and is particularly noted for his depiction of motion, especially when painting dancers or at the race course.
Degas was a classically trained artist who turned his skilled eye to the depiction of contemporary scenes. To achieve the effects of light and motion he used many techniques and embraced different mediums throughout his long career.
Damian will demonstrate some of these techniques.

Damian Callan is an Edinburgh-based artist and teacher. He is particularly interested in figure painting and in depicting every day scenes.  You may have been fortunate enough to have seen Damian at work on large scale friezes of bustling scenes at Edinburgh Airport where the work is now to be on permanent display.
Damian’s own works in oil demonstrate an obvious sympathy with Degas. His works of children at the seaside in particular capture a feeling of movement, light and space which echoes the master.
Damian has been studying and reproducing the working techniques of Degas. He has recorded his observations and given practical advice in his book “PAINT LIKE DEGAS” –  a must for any amateur artist’s stocking this Christmas.  Signed copies of the book will be available to buy after the demonstration.
