One of our committee members heard this group sing and just had to bring them to Penicuik. They produce a rich, melodious sound and we are sure our members and friends will enjoy this evening of song from the vast repertoire of this talented and versatile ensemble.

Opus 8 vocal ensemble was founded in 1986 with the aim of enabling like-minded singers to try to reach a professional
standard of A Cappella singing, while retaining the amateur’s love of singing for its own sake.

The group have built up quite a reputation locally in  Dunfermline where they are based and have also sang abroad in Amsterdam, Denmark,
and St Jean Pied-de-Port, the mediaeval village at the French end of the Camino de Santiago Pilgrim route, to name but a few. Other highlights for the choir include: performances  for the family of the Earl and Countess of Elgin; for the Commonwealth Heads of Government party’s 1997 visit to Culross
palace; recording Scots mediaeval plainchant for the audio-visual presentation in Dunfermline’s St Margaret’s Cave;  performing extracts from the Stirling Gradual manuscript of 1485, prior to it being placed in the National Archive in
The group currently comprises Diane Ashton and Janet Stoddart (soprano), Morna Fleming and Ros Timperley (mezzosoprano),
Karen Russell and Janine Brodie (alto), Derek Burns and Kenneth Thompson (tenor), David Boggon and Robert
Gardner (bass).
Their repertoire is principally secular ranging across centuries and genres. For this performance the group plan to treat us to some light songs in French and English, Scots songs, humorous stuff, and spirituals.
