SUMMER!

opens Sunday 5th July with a second chance to meet the artists on Sunday 12th July.

All are welcome to these events.

Sarah, Ulla, Linda and Kirstie combine to produce this beautiful varied exhibition. Sarah is a professional gardener and microlite enthusiast; her work includes striking aerial images of East Lothian. Ulla is a familiar face in Penicuik, from Pen-y-Coe Press and Open House; the show features her intense landscapes and figure paintings. Linda also volunteers with Penicuik Community Development Trust; her love of local landscape is reflected in colourful pastel and watercolour paintings.      Kirstie’s project to assist elderly people to create art was highlighted at Penicuik Library last year; she interprets landscape in atmospheric paintings and collages.

April News Bulletin

We were thrilled with the rich and varied performance Gerda Stevenson gave us in April with her imaginative self penned songs and with her wonderful band, which you can see here scaling mountains with their ecclectic instruments in this video. Our condolences go to her and her family for the passing of her father, the composer Ronald Stevenson.

We hope you will find something to interest you in our busy programme for April.

EVENTS

April 24th at 7.30pm: The Roxburgh String Quartet play works by Purcell, Mendelssohn and Mozart. The intimate atmosphere of the Arts Centre is the ideal setting to connect with the musicians and appreciate the essence of chamber music.

“Inspired music played with complete control, imagination and deep insight.”

Capture roxburgh

We expect it to be a busy night and recommend reserving tickets early. Tickets £12(£10 for PCAA members) are available from the craft shop or on line.

MAY 22ND at 7.30pm The Arts Assocation is hosting a poetry and music evening in Rosslyn Chapel. Henry Marsh, Margaret Christie and Brian Johnstone will read from their own works and music is by the Miguda Quartet. As usual the star of the show will be the Chapel, which is at its best when being used and enjoyed by people.

Tickets £8(£6 for PCAA members) will be available from the 25th of April.

EXHIBITIONS

April in the Cafe Gallery is an exhibition by Priscilla Brightman. This is Priscilla’s first solo exhibition with us. Priscilla trained at Edinburgh College of Art. Capture priscilla

There will be an opportunity to meet Priscilla on Sunday the 12th of April between 2.00pm and 4.00pm in the Cafe Gallery.

Workshops

The yarn group continues to meet every Wednesday in the cafe at 10.00am and have completed many UFO’s.

About a month ago we met to hear about Linus Quilts, a charity providing comfort quilts to children in hospital. This was followed by two practical workshops to start making some quilts for this very worthwhile cause. To date, two quilts are almost completed and two more are under construction.

A Hidden Gem in Penicuik

zoe writesI had known about Penicuik Community Arts Association (PCAA) for a while, being an arts and crafts lover.  I felt it was an organisation I should get to know better, however being a master in the art of procrastination I didn’t get around to it for quite some time.  It wasn’t until I came along to the ‘Inspired Writers’ group earlier this year that I realised what a great organisation PCAA is.  The passion for arts and crafts, as well as for Penicuik, was evident from the moment I walked through the door.  It was difficult not to be swept along with their enthusiasm.  Actually, who am I kidding?  I let myself be completely swept along with their enthusiasm!  I quickly had the amazing opportunity to get involved with the Penicuik Mystery, a storywriting competition for primary school children in Penicuik.  What a privilege and joy it has been to see what the next generation are capable of…there is definitely a lot of talent in Penicuik.

I came along at a very busy time for PCAA – Penfest 2014 is about to begin and the very dedicated PCAA volunteers are busy setting up a new website for the organisation.  There is also a lot of work going into The Penicuik Epic (we would love to see you at the award ceremony on 13 September!).  Glitches and hitches are, unfortunately, par for the course but we will get there and we hope you will bear with us as we get everything up and running!

I am having so much fun volunteering with PCAA – I think the organisation is an important part of Penicuik and I hope we can go from strength to strength.  Why not come down to West Street and visit the café, you can even venture outside into our garden if the lovely Scottish weather allows.  There is also a craft shop, and exhibitions.  It really is a hidden gem in Penicuik.
musical cafe garden
You heard me mention Penfest…there will be lots of events around Penicuik.  Whether art, music, poetry or crafting is your thing, there is something for you.  Please check out our Penfest 2014 website and come along and support us.  And, if you have a couple of hours a week spare, we would love to welcome more volunteers on board!
